Best Beaches In Louisiana For Beach Combing

Lots of people these days collect sea glass and sea shells. I personally have a huge collection of seashells, but would love to find more sea glass. Sea glass, even broken pieces of pottery that have washed up on the beach, are considered very valuable. Not to mention, they make beautiful jewelry.

They are several places in California that have beaches full of sea glass, but unfortunately there are not many in Louisiana. But I have managed to find three beaches here where you can find all sorts of beach treasures. Those three places are Holly Beach, Cameron Jetty, and Grand Isle. Holly Beach, where I’ve visited twice, is a treasure trove for beachcombing if you go right after a huge storm. Cameron Jetty is just up the road from there. Grand Isle is a bit further on from there, about a five-hour drive east of Holly Beach.

Sea glass has often been referred to as “mermaid tears”, and it’s understandable as to why. Colorful pieces of round-edged glass that sparkle in the sunlight, like valuable gems. Broken pieces of colored glass wind up in the ocean and get rolled over and over again in the tumultuous waves, especially during a strong thunderstorm. Years of being wave-swept will smooth the rough edges and give the glass a frosted appearance.

Holly Beach is one of my favorite places to visit. Holly Beach, also known as the "Cajun Riviera", is a small unincorporated coastal community in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. It’s located about an hour's drive (37.5 miles) south of Sulphur, Louisiana. The first time my family and I visited there, we collected a five-gallon bucket full of beautiful seashells. The second time we visited there, right after a tropical storm, we found the beach full of seashells. You couldn’t take a step in either direction without stepping on one. In the one hour we were there, we ended up collecting about 3 five-gallon buckets full of gorgeous shells and a few pieces of sea glass as well. Holly Beach just after a storm, is in my opinion, the perfect place to go beachcombing.

If you ever get the chance, I would suggest checking these three places out. I can’t verify the number of seashells or sea glass you might find at Cameron Jetty or Grand Isle, however. I would call the local tourists information to find out more before planning a trip there first. But if you’re the adventurous type like me, whether you find any beach treasures there or not, it’s worth the trip.
