Multiple Souls Theory

What happens when two souls are reincarnated into a single solitary body? First, it is imperative to understand the concept of souls. The definition of a soul is the spiritual part of a human being regarded as immortal. The soul is what gives the body life. The soul is the cosmic liquid that fills the empty vessel that is our body. Without one, we wouldn’t be alive. Second, it is important to understand what reincarnation is and how it works. Reincarnation is the belief that our souls are reborn over and over again until we finish our unfinished business here on earth. Whether that business is fixing a past mistake or learning a valuable lesson. There can be many reasons for a soul to be reincarnated.

There have been several television series and movies that demonstrate this idea as a real possibility. Two such movies include the films My Soul To Take and The Ward. Both movies represent the idea that the body can house multiple souls simultaneously, often without the individual’s awareness of the other soul’s presence.

Many cultures (Central and Southern Asia as well as Indonesia) believe that what we commonly call “multiple personalities” is actually a person with multiple souls. According to Asian and Indonesian cultures, many believe that a person’s life and personality are made up of a complex set of psychic interrelations. “The various souls are identified with the separate organs of the body; in others they are related to character traits.” Each one of the uniquely independent souls make up one part of a solitary individual. And each soul has a different predetermined fate after departing from this life. Northern Asian people believe that one soul (or spirit) stays with the deceased’s physical body, one soul makes it’s way up into the heavens, while the remaining soul travels down deep into the netherworld.

In traditional Chinese culture, there are two spirits (or souls) which correlate with yin and yang respectively. Within this soul dualism, every human has both a "spiritual soul" that leaves the body after death and a "physical soul" that remains with the corpse. Chinese traditions differ over the number of spiritual souls and physical souls an individual may possess.

Consider this, the soul is transferred to an unborn baby, a fetus only a few seconds old in the womb. When two or more souls fight over the possession of that fetus (or embryo) both souls are jockeying for control. In the process, both souls end up taking ownership of that embryo. When this happens, it often results in twins, or triplets, being born. The embryo splits so that every soul has its own proper, individual body. Consider the case of fraternal twins, where the children are physically identical but have completely different personalities from one another.

In some cases, when two souls take charge of the same body, the embryo is unable to split or separate at all, leading to the child having a multiple personality disorder. In these particular cases, each individual personality has its own thoughts, ideas, and even memories. The character, Kevin, in the film Split starring James McAvoy, being a prime example of this.

Theoretically, there is a dominant soul and a dormant soul. The dormant soul only showing itself in times of great stress, as a need to protect the others. Sometimes the two (or more) souls can co-exist harmoniously. Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero) in the tv series Doom Patrol is a perfect example of this particular theory.

No matter what the individual’s unique situation, it can be a constant struggle within their own minds. Each soul has their own distinct personality, wants and desires. The multiple souls may not even be aware of the other inhabitants. Their mind can be torn between two lovers, two different career goals, and two very different dreams of the future.

There are several cases where the subject acts a specific way while awake, but if that person were to fall asleep, suddenly the dormant soul can become active and behave much differently. When the dormant soul is awake, present and in temporary control, the subject may walk or talk, but in a very different manner than normal. But, once the person falls back to sleep, upon waking up the following morning, the dominant soul is back in control. Rarely do they retain any memory of the following night’s events or the dormant soul ever even being present.

All in all, the multiple soul theory is a very real possibility, and hope for a legitimate explanation for multiple personality disorders.
